Los Angeles ... a CAN DO! City

ONE SHEET OVERVIEW
“When History and Culture Meet

Los Angeles is strong and optimistic. It hosts a vast array of creative industries and diverse cultures with unfettered entrepreneurship and cutting edge technology. It is a birthplace for imagination and a CAN DO city. On July 4th 2006, Salute America and the Fort Moore Memorial Committee will produce a festival that will Salute Los Angeles as the “Creative Capital of the World©.” The event will pay tribute to the history of Los Angeles, its many cultures and its people. This celebration provides an entertaining day of learning and excitement for the whole family. The festival will draw from the multifaceted components of our great City to make the biggest most informative family event in downtown L.A. on July 4th.

This 15th annual multicultural festival will show Los Angeles pride and unity at its best. Our historic event celebrates L.A.’s first Independence Day of July 4, 1847, with festivities which include a four mile parade with marching bands and dignitaries, veterans, and others, historical reenactments, food and live entertainment.

Set in historic downtown Los Angeles the festival will have a definite multicultural flavor with representation from virtually all cultures which make up Los Angeles. There will be Chinese line dancers, full dress Aztec Indians, El Pueblo entertainers, Buffalo Soldiers, Gospel choirs, Korean groups, Russian artists and more. This early California experience will reach back in history with early Californio bands, period costumes, cannon and musket fire, blacksmiths, pottery making, gold panning, inspiring music, a wide variety of food, ethnic dance, and traditional fireworks majestically exploding above the City.

There will be at least 100 vendor booths providing a taste of Los Angeles featuring food from many cultures. Display booths will feature arts, crafts, foreign embassies and public service information booths. A special CAN DO Kids display will teach child character and family values in a fun educational children’s environment. Salute America “There’s a Winner in You” Extra Effort Awards will be given to CAN DO Kids, veterans, and many others that make a better L.A.

The festival will be widely publicized on radio, television and in the print media. There will be thousands of flyers and posters distributed. Hundreds of street banners will promote the event. Many organizations will participate in grassroots planning and promotion. Private, public and media industries and organizations are expected to participate to make this event purposeful as well as entertaining. All in Los Angeles will be urged to join in this celebration of Los Angeles when history and culture meet.

Our annual event already draws substantial media attention because it is the only event in downtown Los Angeles on July 4th with cannon and musket fire, period costumes, a parade and dignitaries and in 2006 will provide an even greater variety of photo opportunities for the media.

When originally conceived Los Angeles was envisioned as an art and cultural center for the world. Now, over 200 years later the dream continues. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa urged Los Angeles to "Dream with Me" in his Inaugural Address on July 1, 2005. With Villaraigosa’s vision, an ever-greater destiny for Los Angelenos is unfolding as Los Angeles realizes its full potential as the leading city of the 21st century.
