"We're the Can-Do Kids
All the kids in the neighborhood
They cal us the Can-Do Kids
And we're friends and it sure feel good."
The Can-Do Kids, a South Whidby
youth motivational singing and performing group, are spreading
the "Can-Do" spirit: an attitude that inspires their
audiences to achieve and express themselves in a positive way.
After two years of rehearsals and
recording in the studio, the Can-Do Kids have released their first
CD and are taking the show on the road to promote the Can-Do spirit.
Songwriter Linda Colley developed
the idea several years ago and started writings songs and music.
The songs, all of which are copyrighted, include "Froggy
Boogie" and "Do You Believe in Angels?" as well
as "We're the Can-Do Kids," the lyrics of which describe
the energetic spirit and purpose of the group.
After writing the songs, Colley
gathered 21 South Whidbey residents, ages 7 to 82, for the Recording
Group. eight months of rehearsals later they hit the studio, and
in December of 1997 they wrapped up recording sessions at Boots
ranch in Clinton.
Those people deserve a lot of credit,"
said Martha Murphy, producer. "It was a lot of hard work
and not a lot of glory."
Now a second group of kids in the
Performance Group is taking the show on the road, and will make
their Whidbey Island debut at the Whidbey Trader fashion show
Friday. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Can-Do Kids.
Colley says she started the Can-Do
Kids as a way for children to have a voice in the world and to
relay important messages about self-esteem, safety and environment
to other kids.
"We feel that the youth of
today need role models among their peer groups, " Colley
said. "Children are very concerned about our world today
and they need a voice to express that."
